Using wood sticks and wood glue I was asked to create a 3D form with nine linear framework units in which the form conveys movement. The basic unit had to reference one of the Platonic Archimedean solids and each edge of the solid had to be represented in the work.
I choose cube as my basic unit to create a interesting shape with using this stable boring shape. I deformed each cube a little bit in order to create a zigzag movement.
Create a 3D form that showed movement through the use of layering. For our materials, we used (a minimum of) 150 Popsicle sticks and glue.
My inspiration is a structure done by Olafure Eliasson called Umschreibung. I like how the organic shape contrasts with the symmetric building. I tried to take both the sculpture and the building behind it into my consideration. I made a closed shape with the organic twisting part and the stable part. It took a lot of time to figure out how to combine these two using Popsicle sticks.
For the interlinking lines project, we were to use clear acrylic and string to create a 3D form that showed interlinking lines and framework based on photographic research. The final form needed to reflect the structure of our photo. We were also to have the lines be the main focus of the form.
My inspiration is very simple. It is a 2-D pattern . And I wanted to transport it into 3-D structure. It’s simple, but it is also very interesting to look at it. I like how it tricks viewers’ eyes, since it is symmetrical but not symmetrical it is. And I also like I keep the lines to be the main focus of the form.
Design dispensers for Salt and Pepper
This project, I have to work with the idea of opposites.Design a functional mechanism that allows users to refill.Users should be able to easily identify Salt from Pepper. A final prototype of each was 3D Printed in full scale.
My inspiration is from FRIED EGG. I wanted to make them one overlap another. And then I decided It was gonna be better if they can lock together. Because it is going be more convenient for people to hold them and move them together. I make the shape easy to hold and use. The shape is also very organic and playful.
Dimension: 21 x 23 x 30
This project was to make a tray. I made a tray for Sake. I got the inspiration from Kimono. I want it to be clean and have empty space. I used Aspen wood and CNC cut it. I like the light color of it. It is light, clean, simple, just like sake. I talked with my Japanese sensei and got a lot of feedback from her. I like this project overall.
Blossom light (7*7*9inch) is a light fixture that I made in my first product design, and it also was my first project in that class. It was modeled in 3ds max and then 3D printed with ABS plastic material. The process of designing this product was hard but interesting at the same time. I got my idea from Japanese calligraphy and flowers, using curves to show movement. I had a lot of challenging about hiding the light bulb and gravity, but it also made me realized that as a designer I need to take everything into consider. Solving problems taking time. After printed 5 baby size lamps, I eventually solved all problems I had. I like the results and how it shows “hope”. That's the meaning of light and blossom.
This set of office organizer was made out of 20-gage sheet metal. Started with hand cut paper model, then I laser cut chipboard model to check shape and size. Finally, this set was plasma cut and I bent it with bending tools. They also were powder coated by the professional company. I like how we work with the different material and learning different skills, and using different tools. I struggled a lot at first and focus too much on shape. Then I realize function is also very important and it also can give me a cool idea. I thought about what I need for my desk. Frist, it is hard to find the pen I need it I mixed all pens together, it is nice to have a place to put those few pens that I often use. Second, sometime I just randomly put my pen and then it ends up disappear.it will be perfect that I have a place to secure my pen. Third, as a designer, I have many small sketchbooks and they have nowhere to go. They can also package together because I think it is very important for products like this. They are a set to go together.
Interior Space Re-Design
For this project I need to Incorporate assigned chair into the space of my living and dining area. What I picked is George Nelson’s Marshmallow sofa designed in 1956.
All other movable elements within space must be reimagined by you, inspired by chair design. I utilized a slot of cylinder shapes in the area. According to my research of George Nelson, and most of his designs incorporate geometric shapes. They are pretty simple. That why I kept the whole area simple and clean, and used some glass materials. However, I still used some organic elements in my space looks more harmonious and calm.
This is the project that we need to design and model a bus stop located across the street from University of Iowa’s Art Building West.Bus Shelter dimensions should be at least 8’ high, maximum 15’ wide, maximum 5’ deep. The Shelter should be quick to enter and exit easily.
My inspiration for this project is from Jellyfish. I used oval shapes to create the structure. And it also has "foot" to support. I utilized metal material, because both Art Building West and Visual Art building used a lot of metal material. And it also gives my design a modern feeling.
BAOBAO ISSEY MIYAKE WINDOW DESIGN
Brand: BaoBao Issey Miyake
Color Scheme: Achromatic
Window’s dimension: 9.9m x 3.6m x 3.6m
Description: This is window design for BaoBao Issey Miyake. Using color transition from dark to white to evoke people’s emotion change from depress to bright. Inspiration for shape is from Origami same as Issey Mitake’s inspiration for these bags.
I also made this scene in VR by coding.
for this project, I need to design a transition that will connect Art Building West to the new Steven Holl Visual Art Building.the transition is in an underground tunnel, 200’ long, 20’ wide and 15’ tall. There is an 8’ by 20’ landing on both ends of the tunnel which lead to stairs/elevators to the building ground floors.
wanted to make the 3D design in the space talked with 2D design on the wall. The tunnel is designed to let people pass. So I wanted to make people feel the movement of moving forward. Interns of the color choice, I got inspired by the new Steven Holl Visual Art Building; white and mint blue. I make this whole area nice and clean, this is also haw Visual Art Building makes me feel. I also put some booth to display students’ work. And there are posters on walls to indicate this is a tunnel for art school.
